Value Study
The lighting in the painting is pretty simple. Value studies sometimes include multiple versions, but for this one I only did a single study which I continued to adjust and add onto. I find this method helps me build up the values easier, as I can start with large blocks of values and then carve into each section to define the details. I often work mosly in midtones, as you can see. However there is enough variation in local color that the values become readable. Sometimes it helps for me to draw a small spotlight in the direction I envision the light coming from. This serves as a good reminder as I continue to work through the piece. Since this piece serves as a stand alone piece or as part of a diptych, we keep everything well lite and readable. The head is haloed slightly by the background, and the lighting on the fur of the cape create a focal point. I’m happy with how everything separates here and begin color studies after this is finished.
