History Repeats Itself

Blown glass, red thread

This narrative piece encapsulates the theme of the show by examplfying the transformative yet cyclic nature of history. The present would not be the way it is without the past, as it maintains aspects and dynamics that has existed before. The hope is that the present and future continue to advance and better these dynamics.

The artist worked with a partner in order to blow these glass vessels. The teapot, an obect surrounding a very social ritual, is a complicated form to recreate. The beginning teapot is speckled with the fragments of several attempts which didn’t make it to completion. The progression of pieces goes from a speckled color, to fully saturated vessel, then the destruction of the vessel, until the last remaining fragments--ready to be used again in the making of another teapot. The character “愛” is hand engraved on one of the fragments.
